SPRINGFIELD – As a steadfast advocate for gun-violence prevention, State Senator Adriane Johnson proudly supported Karina’s Law, landmark legislation designed to protect domestic violence survivors by making it easier for firearms to be removed from individuals under emergency restraining orders.

“Karina’s Law is a significant step forward in safeguarding survivors of domestic violence,” said Johnson (D-Buffalo Grove). “I am proud to have supported this legislation, which provides vital protections for families across Illinois. No one should have to live in fear due to loopholes in our system.”

Named in memory of Karina Gonzalez and her daughter Daniela, who tragically lost their lives in a domestic violence incident, House Bill 4144 would allow a state’s attorney or individual who has been granted a domestic violence-related order of protection to request the perpetrator’s firearms to be removed by law enforcement. Upon receiving the search warrant for removal of firearms, law enforcement would have 96 hours to respond.

“This law will make a real difference in the lives of survivors,” said Johnson. “By closing this gap, Illinois is ensuring that survivors have the protection they need during their most vulnerable moments.”

House Bill 4144 passed the Senate Monday.
