BUFFALO GROVE – Lake County communities will see more than $1.1 million in new investments to improve local parks and outdoor recreation spaces through the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant program, thanks to strong support from State Senator Adriane Johnson.
“Parks and open spaces are essential to the health, well-being and quality of life of our communities,” said Johnson (D-Buffalo Grove). “These investments will help ensure residents of all ages and abilities can safely access and enjoy Lake County’s natural and recreational assets.”
OSLAD is a cost-sharing program between state and local governments that helps communities fund land acquisition and development for parks and outdoor recreation projects. It’s become one of the most popular grant programs in Illinois. Since its establishment, OSLAD has awarded $675 million for park projects throughout Illinois.
In Lake County, the city of Waukegan received $573,000 to support improvements to the Waukegan Dune and Beach Access Plan, enhancing accessibility and connectivity to the lakefront.
“The improvements at the Waukegan Municipal Beach will improve access to Lake Michigan while safeguarding the Waukegan Dunes,” said Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham. “By investing in designated trails and viewing areas, visitors will be able to enjoy this natural space while responsibly protecting the habitat that makes it unique.”
Additionally, the Lake County Forest Preserve District was awarded $600,000 to improve accessibility at Lake Carina Forest, expanding inclusive access to outdoor recreation opportunities.
“This timely funding gives us the momentum to move from planning to action,” said Lake County Forest Preserves President Jessica Vealitzek. “It’s a meaningful step toward making Lake Carina easier for people of all abilities to enjoy.”
